Jessica Rudder - I never had much desire to go to Hawaii either and then I spent a week there in December.

Now, I understand that there are plenty of things that wouldn’t come up in a vacation week that make visiting a place different from living in a place.

That said, if you love fresh, amazing fruit, find out where all your local farmer’s markets are and GO! We got (literally) 20 pounds of fresh, delicious fruit for ~$15. The best pineapple I’ve ever had, 2 different kinds of mango, these bananas called apple bananas that can’t be exported to the rest of the U.S. (which is a shame because they taste like custard), a bag of passion fruit and a bag of tangerines.

I’ve also never met a more relaxed set of drivers – of course, I was coming from L.A. where the whole city is full of the most passive-aggressive, angry drivers I’ve ever seen, so the contrast was huge.

Anyway, long story short, I get the not wanting to be isolated in the middle of the Pacific thing (because I felt the same way about a one week vacation) but, those islands (and, more importantly, the fruit on those islands) have a way of sneaking into your heart.

If you’re able to say, which island will be your home base?

Emily - I lived on Oahu for 4 years as a kid – military brat. We flew to the Big Island for Girl Scout camp :)

Great beaches, fabulous breezes and lots of people who need Jesus.

Maybe this is a gift from God of respite? It is a beautiful place to live.

I can’t wait to read more about your new job!

Ashlee - Wow, Lily has such a look of peace in her eyes. So great to see her HOME and with her forever family. I definitely agree- it’s surreal to be here in the US with people we love who we first met in Uganda!

Cindy - Have a great time with the I-phone : )

Suzy - Great pic of your mom and dad! And I would LOVE to do Thanksgiving again — am making turkey soup today. :-)

Thanks for the reminders of all that we have to be thankful for. I’m reading Bonhoeffer, and am thankful for the opportunity to love Jesus under pressure — not as bad as Nazi Germany, but there are similarities. Jesus never changes. His Word flourishes in the dry valley if His people seek only Him. Bless you during this Advent season, Mandie!

Hey, send me some good music from Nashville! Love you, Suzy

Betsy Hake - I have loved following your beautiful journey…..are you coming back to the USA for awhile? Thank you for sharing your ministry so beautifully through amazing words and photos. Much love, Betsy

MandieJoy - Thank you, Betsy! Yes, I’m back in the US for at least the next 6 months. I’ll post an update here soon. SO excited to hear that Noe is going to University of the Nations. I’m moving to the YWAM Kona base sometime this year.

MandieJoy - You can get Turkey in Honduras, Suzy? How did I never know that? Also, people keep mentioning Bonhoeffer to me…I need to get my hands on one of his books. Which do you recommend?

MandieJoy - Thanks, Cindy! I’m in love with it. :)

r.elliott - stopping by from Ann’s…wonderful pictures…such precious little ones…I have that same necklace with my soon to be first grandbaby’s initials on it…love it…welcome to Nashville…

Jamie @ Six Bricks High - Found your blog through Ann’s – enjoyed my visit here! Looking forward to reading more of your story. Loved your list of gifts.

Ang - Welcome Home and Congratulations! We were stationed in Turkey for two years. My husband missed American food and I missed Target. We are to be stationed in Alaska next. Where we will be living does not have a Target. I was very sad when I found out! Merry Christmas and Happy 2012!

Lauren @ Confident of This - YES!!! I really heart target myself, & my kids love eating dinner there, lol! I blog at ConfidentOfThis.com and SummitStreetJoy.com, live in VA, am wife to a youth pastor, mommy to 3…. and share your passion for adoption & Africa, although I’ve never been! We have felt called to adopt and are relying on God’s perfect timing in it all…

Blessings to you! :)
Lauren

MandieJoy - Thank you for reading, Lauren! You have some CUTE kiddos. :)
